Greyhills Academy wrestlers compete at state level

TUBA CITY-Congratulations are in order for three Greyhills Academy wrestlers that qualified for and went to the state championships on Feb 8 and 9.

The wrestlers were Rudy Charlie (140 pounds), Ryan Sangster (152 pounds), and Garrett Manygoats (125 pounds).

Despite injuries, senior Ryan Sangster, (with a record of 28-18) placed thirteenth. Garrett Manygoats, a sophomore, (with a record of 29-20) wrestled three tough opponents, defeating one and nearly upsetting the second before being defeated by the third.

Senior Rudy Charlie had a perfect season at 42-0 and received two outstanding wrestling awards. Charlie placed first at three major tournaments Blue Ridge, Coolidge and Payson. Charlie also placed first at Regionals.

Charlie made it all the way to the championship where he lost a very close and controversial 2-1 decision to Saharita. Rudy as well as all the Greyhills wrestlers made great sacrifices this year and came out on top as men.

Tuba City should be proud of the way these young men conducted and represented themselves, their clans, and the Navajo Nation. Thanks to the following wrestlers for sticking it out all season: Francita Bitah (103 pounds), Kyle Tso (160 pounds), Dominic Manygoats (198 pounds), Skylan Fowler (171 pounds), Louis Hascon III (160 pounds), Naahazhooni Begay (171 pounds), Erick Van Winkle (189 pounds), Vince Jim, Gary Blackrock and our manager, Alicia White.
