Mustangs stampede Bruins

POLACCA -- Ryan Young led Monument Valley past Hopi in boys basketball.

Monument Valley overcame an early deficit to beat Hopi, 81-58, Jan. 17.

Hopi fell to 4-13 overall and 2-4 in the 3A North.

Young topped Monument Valley with 21 points, Reggie Todachine fired in a dozen points, Ryan Manheimer chipped in with 11, Sean Loy pitched in with 10, Domingue Whitehorse netted eight, Skyhawk Eisenberger tossed in seven points, Raymond Blair and Rashad Fett scored four points apiece, Mervin Russell and Bernard Tallman had a deuce each and Jordan Sullivan hit a foul shot.

Renaldo Wartz paced Hopi with 25 points, Mike Lomatewama tossed in 10 points, Michael Thayer pitched in with eight points, Shawn Honanie scored a half dozen, Vincent Timms netted four points, Matt Lamson nailed a three and Jeremy Adams had a deuce. Wartz fired in three treys in the first period as Hopi took a 17-14 edge. Young scored five points to top the Mustangs during the period.

Young poured in 14 points during the second quarter as Monument Valley jumped ahead 41-32 at intermission. Lomatewama scored six points for Hopi during the second period.

Todachine and Eisenberger tossed in five points each in the third quarter as Monument Valley extended the lead to 60-43. Wartz scored seven points for the Bruins in the third quarter.

Todachine scored another six points in the final quarter as the Mustangs rode to victory.

Lady Bruins game

The Monument Valley girls basketball team was too much for Hopi.

Allison Holiday poured in 26 points as Monument Valley beat Hopi, 68-45, in girls high school basketball action Jan. 17 at Hopi.

For the Lady Mustangs, Robin Curleyhair fired in a dozen points, Kara Greymountain contributed 10 points, Ingrigue Salt netted nine, Trivera Jake pitched in with a half dozen, Twyla Benally tossed in four points, and Chloe Sullivan and Devonne Tsosie had a deuce each.

Traci Honanie topped Hopi with 16, Savanna Anderson tossed in a dozen, Deidra Jones netted nine, Erynne Zahne and Candace Pocheoma scored three each and Carrie Sakeva added a deuce.

Honanie tossed in six points and Jones added four points as Hopi led 10-9 after the first quarter.

Holiday poured in nine points in the second period as Monument Valley jumped ahead 26-21 at halftime.

Anderson kept Hopi close with six points during the quarter.

Greymountain fired in eight points and Holiday added six as the Lady Mustangs led 42-34 going to the final period. Anderson and Honani scored four each for Hopi in the third quarter.

Curleyhair and Holiday scored six each in the final period as Monument Valley grabbed the victory.
