Council does 180 on Alaskan Camper issue

In a move completely opposite of their original decision, the Winslow City Council voted 6-1 last week during a special meeting to allow Alaskan Camper to sell the property and pay off the city in 60 days.

Upon returning from executive session, Vice Mayor Harold Soehner moved to instruct staff to send written instructions to the Camelback Title Company noting that the city has taken back its objections and to have instructions for escrow sent to the city.

With the new agreement, the city will recover all monetary indebtedness from Alaskan Camper.

Mayor Allen Affeldt said he had some major concerns, noting that the council had been advised something completely opposite the week before. Affeldt was the desenting vote.

The council agreed that the city was in a bad position, and that they needed to not dwell on the past, but move forward to ensure it does not occur again.

City Administrator Jim Ferguson explained that with this decision, the council would not be apart of any sale of the property.

The concern was raised that with the council not involved, there would be no way to make sure the new business was viable.

Ferguson noted that the company interested in buying the property met with him and is planning on holding a presentation for the council. He added that they have shared their intents and are in the procession of hiring.
