Lady Bulldogs place third at regionals

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs finished third in the 3A North Region Basketball Tournament played on Friday and Saturday at Ganado. Winslow took a 20-9 record into the Arizona 3A Conference Tournament which began on Tuesday in Flagstaff. The Lady Bulldogs lost to eventual regional champion Monument Valley on Friday, and then edged Tuba City for third place on Saturday.

The Monument Valley Mustangs defeated the Lady Bulldogs 54-48 in a 3A North Region semi-final game on Friday. The victory sent the Lady Mustangs into the Championship Game on Saturday against the host Ganado Lady Hornets, 53-44 victors over the Tuba City Lady Warriors. Monument Valley prevailed against the Lady Hornets and took the region's top seed into the state tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs led Monument Valley 14-12 after the first quarter and 21-19 at half-time before falling behind 37-34 in the third quarter. The Lady Mustangs expanded their lead to its final margin in the fourth period.

Allison Holiday led all scorers with 24 points for Monument Valley. Kara Greymountain was also in double figures for the Lady Mustangs with 14 points.

Bencita Johnson led Winslow with 21 points. Arveda Yazzie was also in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points.

Winslow edged the Tuba City Lady Warriors 37-35 in the third place game on Saturday despite only having four players in the scoring column.

The Lady Bulldogs trailed 13-12 after the first period, but led 22-17 at the intermission. Tuba City regained the lead in the third quarter and took a 28-26 advantage into the final period. Winslow came back to erase that deficit and claim the victory. The Lady Bulldogs won the game at the charity line where they were14 of 16. Tuba City made four of its six free throw attempts.

Arveda Yazzie led Winslow with 11 points. Elisha Billie was also in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points.

Andrea Slim was in double figures for Tuba City with 11 points.

The 3A North Region will be represented in the state tournament by Monument Valley, Ganado, Winslow and Tuba City. Play in that tournament began on Tuesday in Flagstaff and will continue on Wednesday and Friday before moving to Glendale for the semi-finals and finals on Feb. 24 and 25.
