Wrestlers are Regional Champs

The Winslow Bulldogs wrestling team took the 3A North Region Tournament Championship held at Monument Valley High School in Kayenta on Saturday.

The Bulldogs won on the strength of six first place finishes as 10 of the team's 12 entrants qualified for the Arizona State 3A Conference Tournament.

Winslow finished with a total of 147.5 points to 113 for second place Monument Valley and 106.5 for third place Ganado.

The Bulldogs claimed six first places as Enrique Vigil (103), Daniel Bailon (140), Anthony Martinez (145), John Gonzales (160), Joe Larsen (189) and Justin Powell (215) all won their divisions. Powell was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Kirk Ramsey (119) and David Young (heavyweight) finished second in their divisions.

Justin Garcia (125), Tommy Taylor (130) and Victor Martinez (145) finished third in their divisions.

All wrestlers who placed in the top four in their weight divisions qualified for the Arizona State 3A Conference Tournament to be held in Glendale on Friday and Saturday.

Winslow greatly enhanced its chances for a state title by qualifying all but two of its team for that tournament.

The Winslow Mail wishes to thank Justin Powell for supplying the information for this article and wish him and the Winslow Bulldogs "good luck" in the state tournament.
