TUBA CITY -- To eliminate "adult bullying" and foster a healthier, more supportive climate for its student population, Tuba City Unified School District is constantly looking for ways to improve, enhance and support new methods for classroom management, nurturing student achievement toward higher test scores for its entire seven schools.
Love and Logic, a national organization specialized in training staff members to take a gentler, more respectful approach to student behavior and learning will be the featured topic on Feb. 15 for a half day in-service.
It will be held in the new TC Junior High School Cafeteria multi-purpose building, located on east Fir Street in uptown Tuba City, next to the TC Junior High classroom buildings and gym.
The training will also address the TCUSD Consolidation Plan in line with Public Law 107-110, No Child Left Behind, that mandates school to employ "highly qualified teachers at the beginning of the 2005-06 school year."
As well the training would allow TCUSD to come into compliance with both Goal 4 and 5 of the current school improvement plans. Goal 4 mandates safe schools, a healthy school climate having understanding and compassionate staff meeting student basic needs.
Goal 5 targets improving the current graduation rate with professionally healthier adult staff through teacher benchmarks, effective classroom management, increasing achievement, increasing attendance and reducing discipline referrals.
These leadership improvement goals include individual principals at all schools as well.
It is more cost effective for TCUSD #15 to hold this Love and Logic staff in-service at its home environment on the Tuba City District site than to send many of its staff members to an outside reservation location, which would include plane fare, motel fare and per diem expenses for each staff member.
"People Friendly Schools" is what the TCUSD is looking to have by the year's end and site council parent members will also be a part of this special in-service.
