Council receives update on recycling program

Utility Manager Allen Rosenbaum updated the Winslow City Council on the recycling program last week.

Rosenbaum noted that the city began the program in 2000 with one container at the transfer site. In 2001, the city applied for grants for two more trailers.

In 2002, with the help of Councilwoman Dee Rodriguez, Arizona Clean and Beautiful and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, the program received a trailer for the region.

In 2003, the program continued to expand with the North Eastern Arizona Recycling Association (NEARA). They received a large trailer.

Rosenbaum explained that the first year, the program hauled just over three tons of recyclables, and that each year that amount has increased.

He noted that last year, 143 tons were taken in 94 trips.

The manager explained staff is having a problem making trips to Flagstaff to drop loads, but has been able to do it with help from other departments.

Rosenbaum suggested one way to help would be to have a curb side recycling service.

He explained that officials from Waste Management have said it could be done at no or very little cost.

Vice Mayor Harold Soehner asked if Waste Management officials could attend the Feb. 7 work session to present what could be done.

Rosenbaum said that would probably work, as Waste Management has become proactive.

The council will meet with Waste Management officials at the Feb. 7 work session to discuss the possibility of a curb side recycling service.
