Update on Hopi Special Election for Chairman

KYKOTSMOVI - The process for the 2006 special elections on the Hopi reservation are in full swing at the Hopi election office. Precinct officers (poll workers) have all been selected, training for precinct officers are in order, polling places have been secured, telephone requests are in order, absentee ballot applications requests are coming in on a daily bases, new voters are registering and questions from the interested individuals are asking like clockwork: "Who are all running?"

Deadlines are what the Hopi Tribal elections office is encountering at this time. The following is a list of deadlines that everyone should be aware of:

• Dec. 25 - Deadline to request a Primary Election Absentee Ballot Application.

• Dec. 28, 2006 - Preliminary candidate qualification interviews.

• Jan. 3, 2007 - Training for the Precinct Officers who have been selected to work at the polls for the Primary Election. This training will be held at the Bacavi Community Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Jan. 9 - Deadline for submission of Candidate Petitions at 5 p.m. to the offices of the Tribal Secretary or the Office of the Vice Chairman.

• Jan. 11 - Final round of candidate qualification interviews.

• Jan. 19, 20, 22 and 23 -Primary Election Early Voting at the Hopi Election Office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Jan. 24 - Primary election.

• Feb. 7 - General Election information.

Monday, Jan. 8, is the deadline to request a General Election Absentee Ballot Application. Applications can be requested by phone, mail, fax, e-mail or walk-in.

To date, candidates who have qualified and been certified by the Hopi Election Board are: Valjean Joshevama Jr., Harry Nutumya, Elgean Joshevama and Tommy A. Canyon. There will be one set of interviews on Dec. 28 and the last interviews will be on Jan. 11.

Feb. 2, 3, 5 and 6 will be Early Voting for the General Election and will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hopi Election Office.
