The Winslow Little League 9-10 year old girls' All Star Softball Team, which won all four of its games in the district tournament, was still alive in the state tournament at Glendale after Thursday's game.
Winslow defeated the Glendale Sidewinders 9-3 on July 17 and Blythe, California 13-3 on July 19. On July 20, the Winslow girls continued their success with an 11-1 victory over Mesa Red Mountain.
A 2-0 win over Tucson Thorny Dell sent the Winslow All Stars into the semi-finals with a 7-0 record in tournament play. Unfortunately, the team suffered its only loss in an 8-7 heartbreaker to Casa Grande on July 24. As the final round was single elimination, that loss eliminated Winslow.
Coach Quinten Hayes described the loss as hard to believe. Winslow took a 7-0 lead in the final inning and had two outs but could not avoid the mistakes that kept Casa Grande's comeback effort going. A team Winslow had defeated handily in pool play, the Glendale Sidewinders, wound up winning the tournament.
The team consisted of Haley Hayes, Jaleisa Hayes, Taylor Baca, Taylor Hill, Jacie Cochran, Brooke Baldwin, Megan Lymer, Richelyn Villanueva, Vonaisha Flannagan, Lauren McCabe, Taryn Coffey, Lexi Edwards and Katonya Begay.
