MONUMENT VALLEY -- Hopi High School outslugged Monument Valley, 16-13, Tuesday in high school softball action.
Hopi improved to 15-8 overall and 5-1 in the 3A North Conference. The Lady Bruins are in second place in conference tied with Tuba City and Window Rock.
Hopi had 16 runs on 13 hits and made three errors. Monument Valley had 13 runs on 12 hits and made eight errors.
Marlinda Dewakuku pitched the complete game for Hopi as she struck out six and walked 10.
Hopi High Coach Dirk Wirth said Dewakuku was a bit rusty because she hadn't pitched in several days.
"She had trouble with her control, but we still won.
We just need to try to get her to practice more," Coach Wirth said.
Hollie Laban led the Hopi High hitting brigade with four hits including two doubles and she scored four runs. Dordale Tsosie smacked two doubles. Kristy Timms had a double and two runs scored. Germaine Pedro had two hits and two runs scored. Celina Nash had two hits and two runs scored. Pinch hitter Renisha Lopez whacked a triple and pinch hitters Loren Lomatska and Majol Honanie also reached base.
Coach Wirth said the Hopi High fielders had a few miscues but played solid. He said Kristy Pavatea, Germaine Pedro, Celina Nash and Hollie Laban were the leaders in the field.
