Freshmen, JV football fall to Snowflake

Snowflake 42, Winslow 14

The Snowflake High School junior varsity football team defeated the Winslow junior varsity 42-14 on Thursday in Winslow. The loss left Winslow with a 0-2 record for the season.

Devin Peterson scored for Snowflake on the first play from scrimmage of the game, racing 76 yards to pay dirt. The conversion failed and the Lobos led 6-0.

Snowflake scored again on a six-yard pass from Nick Reidhead. After the conversion failed, the Lobos led 12-0 with 5:57 left in the first quarter.

Peterson ran 93 yards for his second touchdown of the game to end the first quarter scoring. Snowflake led 18-0 after the conversion failed.

Winslow got on the scoreboard on a quarterback sneak by Artie Gonzales after his 20-yard run set up the play. Marcus Woods ran for the conversion that cut Snowflake's lead to 18-8 with 8:54 left until intermission.

Jake Wade ran one yard with 3:38 left and Snowflake led 24-8 after the conversion failed.

The Lobos scored on the final play of the first half, a 31-yard pass from Reidhead to Peterson. The conversion failed again and Snowflake led 30-8 at the break.

Peterson collected his fourth touchdown of the game on a 35-yard run midway through the third period. The conversion failed again and the Snowflake lead stood at 36-8.

The Lobo defense got into the scoring act when Jeremy Chee picked up a Winslow fumble and ran five yards for a 42-8 lead after the conversion failed.

Winslow got the only score of the fourth quarter on 66-yard run by Darius Thomas. The conversion failed and the 42-14 final score was on the board.

Winslow will play not play again until Sept. 22 when they host Monument Valley at 6 p.m.

Freshmen

Snowflake 40, Winslow 12

The Snowflake High School freshman football team defeated the Winslow freshmen 40-12 in Winslow on Thursday. The loss left Winslow with a record on 0-2-1 for the season.

Midway through the first period, Snowflake took a 6-0 lead on a 45-yard punt return by Travis Reddick. The conversion attempt failed.

The Lobos increased their lead to 12-0 on a 10-yard run by Bubba Pringle with 5:14 left in the first half. The run completed a 28-yard drive following a short Winslow punt.

Snowflake made it 18-0 with only 59 seconds left until halftime when Trevor Merrill ran 12 yards after Eric Mammon had given the Lobos the ball on the Winslow 12 with a pass interception. Again, the conversion attempt failed.

Winslow got on the scoreboard on the ensuing kickoff as Victor Martinez raced 90 yards to the Lobo endzone. The conversion run failed and the Lobos led 18-6 at the half.

The Lobos got a gift touchdown to start the third period when they recovered a stray Winslow lateral at the Bulldogs' 12 yard line. Flake passed nine yards to Reddick to increase the lead to 24-6.

Moments later, Reddick returned a Winslow punt 60 yards and Pringle ran for the two-point conversion that gave the Lobos a 32-6 lead.

Winslow scored its second touchdown of the night with just 1:55 left in the third quarter on a 79-yard pass from Matthew Begay to Andrew Flores. The score cut Snowflake's margin to 32-12.

Reddick returned a Winslow punt 42 yards early in the fourth period. Joseph Bailey ran for the two-point conversion that posted the final points of Snowflake's 42-12 victory.

The Winslow freshmen will play St. Johns at St. Johns on Thursday, Sept. 15 before returning home to host St. Johns on Sept. 22.
