The Little Colorado River Democrats honored Helen Butler last Saturday at LaPosada for her longtime commitment to the Democratic Party.

Butler has served in numerous positions, including as a precinct committeeman. She has been involved with the Navajo County Democrats and was a delegate during Bill Clinton's election race.

Butler was born in Oklahoma. She and her husband John, have four kids.

She is a member of the Red Hat Club, and several of her fellow members were at the award ceremony.

During the ceremony, numerous people spoke, including Claudia Maestas and Tom McCauley.

Maestas said Butler was one of the most motivated poeple. Maestas also said that after democratic meetings most would go home, but Helen would go home and organize whatever needed to be done.

McCauley said it was Butler that got him into the Democratic Party. He thanked her for all she has done for the party.

It was also said that Butler is known for saying "How can I help."

This is the first such honor the LCRD group has awarded.

John Butler said his wife is an inspiration.

He told a story of how when their children were younger, they would help Helen by passing out flyers for whichever election was taking place.

"I want to thank all of you that came," said Butler. "And all of you that put this together. It has been a joy and a pleasure."

Butler said one of her favorite experiences was going on a trip to New York with Governor Janet Napolitano, who at the time was a delegate.

"Winslow is a wonderful place to be and work," she said.

Among those attending were Congressional hopeful Jack Jackson Jr., who will be running for the first district representative slot; Jim Pederson, who is a U.S. Senate candidate who will be running against Sen. Jon Kyl next year; and Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard.

Following the award ceremony, a no host dinner was held at LaPosada.
