It will be a dogfight at Mesa Community College on Thursday when the Winslow Bulldogs, top seed from the 3A North Region, meets the Safford Bulldogs, second seed from the 3A South Region. Winslow defeated Sedona Red Rock 42-19 in their opening round game. Safford survived a 15-14 thriller over Payson in their opening round game.
Winslow will come into the contest with an 11-1 record. Safford is 8-3. The Safford Bulldogs have defeated Ganado 45-12, Willcox 14-6, Florence 31-21, Santa Cruz 35-6, Seton Catholic 38-24, Globe 14-0, Alchesay 31-6 and Payson 15-14. The Safford Bulldogs have lost to Thatcher 28-14, Sahuarita 16-7 and Coolidge 47-14.
Running back Manny Jurado has come up big for the Safford Bulldogs.
The winner of the Winslow Safford contest will meet the winner of a game slated for 5 p.m. on the same field between Blue Ridge and Fountain Hills. The Blue Ridge Yellowjackets ran all over the Seton Catholic Sentinels 41-0 and Fountain Hills took Monument Valley to task 36-0 in first round games.
Other first round games saw Wickenburg best Window Rock 63-0, River Valley edge Tuba City 46-40, Coolidge punish Snowflake 48-0 and Round Valley defeat Florence 28-12. Those results set up matches between Wickenburg and Round Valley and Coolidge and River Valley.
