Softball edges Round Valley to improve to 7-1

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs edged the Round Valley Lady Elks 5-4 in a non-conference softball game played at Eagar on Tuesday, March 8. The win improved Winslow’s record to 7-1 for the season.

The tightly played contest went eight innings with Winslow pushing over a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Round Valley got one back but it was not enough and the Lady Bulldogs had their seventh win of the season.

Tahmie Smith sent the distance for win. She allowed four runs on six hits, walked one and struck out 11 Lady Elks.

Tessa Ramsey led Winslow at the plate with a two-for-four day. Brianna Conatser and Quintina Begay were one-for-two. Jennifer Estudillo and Anna Pacheco were one-for-three. Alex Magana was one-for-five.

Tournament features 13 teams

The Second Annual Bojo’s/3C’s Softball Tournament will feature 13 high school teams. The host Winslow Lady Bulldogs will defend the championship they won in the inaugural event in 2004. One game will be played on Thursday with the bulk of the contests to be played on Friday and Saturday.

Winslow is one of seven teams in Pool A and will open play in Thursday’s only game at 4 p.m. on the city softball field against Valley Christian. Other teams in Pool A include Show Low, which will be Winslow’s opponent at 8 a.m. on Friday, also on the city softball field, Chino Valley, Tuba City, Chinle and St. Johns.

Teams in Pool B include Alchesay, Joseph City, Monument Valley, Round Valley, Holbrook and Camp Verde.

All of Winslow’s games on Friday and early Saturday will be played on the city softball field. The Lady Bulldogs will face St. Johns at 11 a.m. and Chinle at 5 p.m. on Friday and Tuba City at 8 a.m. and Chino Valley at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Championship games will be played on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. with the Pool A winner meeting the Pool B winner on the city softball field. The Pool A second place finisher will meet the Pool B second place team at the Little League Field. Third place finishers in pool play will meet on the junior varsity field.

There will be games at all three locations from 8 a.m. on Friday until 2 p.m. on Saturday except there will be no 5 p.m. game on the junior varsity field on Friday. Game times at all three locations are set for 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
