TUBA CITY -- In February, Tuba City Unified School District Governing Board adopted a new academic modified school calendar that will take effect this July 1.
This modified calendar proposes some advantages for both students and school community.
It is hoped the modified calendar will provide a more supportive and continuous learning environment by having short two-week long intercession breaks throughout the year.
These two week breaks will occur during the fall, winter and spring, three in total, with a shorter summer vacation.
This differs from the traditional school schedule, which normally gives one week off during both spring and fall with a two week break in the winter.
The major drawback voiced by students and staff is the loss of the longer vacation break in the summer. However, outside school attendance studies have shown that a more intense focused schedule results in higher retention of academics, which could result in higher test scores and GPAs.
During the two-week intercessions, of which there will be three starting with this 2005-06 school year, students can partake in specialized tutoring offered through each school site.
Students are also being encouraged to enroll early to get the best class schedule possible, with attendance being a extremely high priority to make the most of the new calendar.
