Construction resumes on State Route 64

CAMERON -- Paving on State Route 64 between Cameron, Ariz., and the Grand Canyon, was slated to begin on Tuesday, June 21, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Brief delays will be experienced by motorists as construction crews begin working from milepost (MP) 276, near the Navajo Nation and Kaibab National Forest boundaries, to MP 288, just west of Cameron. Crews are placing the final layer of pavement, which is expected to be completed in two weeks.

During paving work, one lane will be closed and pilot vehicles will escort motorists through the construction zone. Also, speed limits will be reduced, and motorists must obey all posted restrictions throughout the project area. Message boards and other traffic signs will provide additional construction details. Flaggers and law enforcement officers will be on hand as well to assist with traffic movement and compliance with posted restrictions.

As part of a $5-million effort, Southwest Asphalt Paving will resurface the roadway and turnouts with rubberized asphalt, which will provide a smoother ride to motorists. The final phase of the project, which includes striping and the installation of rumble strips and traffic signs, will be completed by August.

The project is a continuation from last summer's work on SR 64, which also included the replacement of guardrail along the route.
