Lady Bulldogs enjoying success in summer games

Success on the basketball court is no stranger to Winslow High School girls' basketball coach Don Petranovich. Whether it is a summer program or the regular high school season, "Petro" knows how to win basketball games. His six state titles and routine state tournament appearances attest to that fact as do the successes of his teams at summer tournaments.

The Winslow girls have played in two tournaments to date, winning all five games at Ganado on June 10 and 11 and winning four and losing one at Winslow on Friday and Saturday. The loss was to Ganado by a razor thin two point margin.

Petranovich entered two teams in the Winslow tournament. The primary team featured all-state guard senior Levyna Ben and dynamic play-maker junior Bencita Johnson along with senior stalwarts Janeen Yazzie and Arveda Yazzie and Celeste Sangster. Other juniors on the team included Elisha Billie, Chanel Renfro, Chaunasea Singer and Amber Nelson. Freshman Raquel Singer rounded out the squad. This was the squad that will be primarily varsity players.

The team of underclassmen played very well against varsity competition and gained valuable experience. Members of that squad were Audrey Dickson, Shelly Johnson, Jessica Jacobs, Cassandra Jensen, Prestina Dickson, Kiraly Kinlacheenie, Diadra Nezzie, Celeste Begay, Adrienne Dickson, Claryna Tsosie, Shavanne Begay and Shannon Benally.

Teams participating in the tournament included two teams each from Winslow and Ganado, Window Rock, Snowflake, Holbrook and Gallup.

The Winslow girls are slated to participate in a camp or tournament in Mesa on Friday and Saturday.
