Navajo Times names Bulldogs athletes and coaches best in Four Corners area
Vargas, Garnett, Payne, and coaches Bordner and Griffith honored

The Navajo Times continued its practice of honoring athletes from the Four Corners region high schools in Arizona, Utah and New Mexico for their accomplishments. Athletes from 38 high schools covered by The Navajo Times are eligible to receive honors. Winslow High School has traditionally fared well in the earning of such honors.

Winslow High School senior Orlando Vargas was the recipient of the prestigious Male Athlete of the Year Award for the 2004-2005 school year. He represented Winslow High School in football, basketball and track and field competition. He was also the winner of the Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year Award.

Stephanie Garnett, the ASU-bound WHS senior, was the Female Track and Field Athlete of the Year. She is a talented sprinter and broad, triple and high jumper. She was also a key player on Winslow's Arizona State Champion basketball team and the Lady Bulldogs volleyball squad.

Junior centerfielder Jordan Payne was honored as the publication's Baseball Player of the Year. Payne is also a multi-sport athlete who excelled at football and basketball.

Winslow High School coaches Bob Bordner and Art Griffith were honored as Coaches of the Year for track and field and baseball respectively.

Awards given to Winslow athletes for spring sports accomplishments went to Lucas Armenta, Anthony Martinez and Matt Oso for baseball. Lillian Hancock, Nick Anderson, Carlos Quezada, Janeen Yazzie and Corey Dean received honor for track and field.

Athletes so honored received plaques, certificates and t-shirts. Those receiving top awards were presented with blankets and equipment bags commemorating their accomplishments. All were recognized and honored recently during ceremonies at the Navajo Nation Museum at Window Rock.
