Bob Hall takes over as Chamber Director

Bob Hall has been giving people makeovers for 30 years. Now the new Chamber of Commerce Director leaves behind hair styling to remake Winslow's business community.

"I'd like to create more events that draw more tourism and that people of Winslow can have a good time at," Hall said.

Hall moved to Winslow 15 years ago from the San Francisco area. He said he was not involved with the community there but found Winslow to be a friendly place where he unexpectedly planted his roots.

"I didn't know I would love it so much," he said. "I figured I'd stay a year or two and go back. But I don't miss California at all anymore."

He opened As You Like It, a hair salon, which is now Judy's Salon. Hall was a Chamber Board member for eight years but decided not to run again. When the director position opened up, he said he just knew it was meant to be.

Throughout his life, Hall has hosted parties, fundraisers, get-togethers and even a hootenanny or two. He's organized the Festival of Trees, the Taste of Winslow and talent shows, all of which earned him the Rotary Club's Citizen of the Year in 2001.

He says he has a myriad of ideas to help the 199 members of the Chamber of Commerce as well as attract more business to join. He said he also has plans for new events and ways to improve existing festivals.

Hall said he would take advantage of government grants to relieve some of the burden on local businesses.

Mainly, he wants the Chamber to be more visible in the community so people stop asking him, "what does the Chamber do?"

"I think if we can create a way for owners to network, whether through regular get-togethersÉ or some kind of communication, and not just downtown businesses but all who are Chamber of Commerce members, everyone would benefit," he said.
