Winslow All-Stars beat Mesa American, 4-1 and Verde Valley, 7-0
Winslow 11-12-year-old girls' All-Stars were off to a 2-0 start in the State Tournament through last weekend

Winslow 4, Mesa American 1

The Winslow 11-12 year old girls' All-Star Team defeated Mesa American, 4-1, in an opening round game of the Arizona State Tournament at Winslow on Friday. Ivorie Cochran scattered seven hits to get the win.

Mesa scored in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead on a single and an RBI double by pitcher Jacklin Lewis.

Winslow missed a golden scoring opportunity in the bottom of the first. Lewis walked two batters and hit two more but started a pitcher-to-catcher-to-first double play before hitting the second batter. She induced a ground out to end the inning.

Cochran drove home Winslow's first run with a single in the bottom of the third that scored Alex Lomeli who had walked and stolen second. Cochran scored on a ground out by Mallory Smith after taking second on a throw to the plate and stealing third. The scores gave Winslow a 2-1 lead.

Winslow picked up two important insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Smith. Gabby Stacey had singled and Cochran had reached on one of two Mesa errors in the frame. Neither of the runs was earned.

Cochran allowed one run on seven hits and a walk. She struck out 10 batters.

Lewis gave up only three hits, but three walks, three hit batsmen and two errors proved costly. Only two of Winslow's four runs were earned.

Cochran and Stacey were each one-for-two for Winslow. Smith was one-for-three with three RBI.

Winslow 7, Verde Valley 0

The Winslow Little League 11-12-year-old girls' All-Star Team defeated Verde Valley 7-0 to remain undefeated in the Arizona State Tournament on Saturday in Winslow. The win left Winslow with a 2-0 mark in the tournament and dropped Verde Valley to 0-2.

Mallory Smith turned in a pitching gem, allowing only one hit and one walk, both in the final inning of play. She struck out 12 batters.

Winslow grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two run single by Smith that scored Gabby Stacey who had walked and Alex Lomeli who was hit by the pitcher.

The lead grew to 3-0 in the third inning when Ivorie Cochran reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

A four-run fifth inning for Winslow put the game out of reach. Lomeli led off with a triple and scored on a single by Cochran. Smith and Robina Villanueva both walked and eventually scored.

Verde Valley got an excellent pitching effort from McKenzie Ricca who allowed only five hits, three walks and one hit batsman. She fanned eight batters.

Melissa Jacobs was one-for-one at the plate. Lomeli, Smith and Jodee Panana were all one-for-two. Cochran was one-for-three.

Brittney Lowler had Verde Valley's only hit, a bunt single in the final inning.

Late Breaking Update

The 11-12 girls team lost to Peoria, 10-7, in extra innings Monday night. Cochran pitched the entire game for Winslow, which gave up three unearned runs in the seventh inning. Winslow was off Tuesday and plays again Wednesday (July 20) but the schedule was not posted as to whom they face.
