Festival looking to grow despite Park closure

With the seventh annual Standin' on the Corner Festival less than three months away, cleanup of the debris from the Oct. 18, 2004 fire is doubtful. However, Standin' on the Corner Foundation President Glenn Howeth said he doesn't think that will dampen the enthusiasm for the festival.

"The festival has taken over the Park. It draws people because of the festival. It's become bigger. So I don't think we are even looking at less of a crowd," he said. "We have already started getting vendors that we have never seen before."

Howeth said he expects musical headliners Hotel California and Mogollon to return and the Foundation has added Skip Banks, a comedian and street magician, to fill-in between bands to keep crowds at the stage.

"Instead of us trying to rush in 15 minutes to get from band to band and don't lose the crowd and to give people what they want, we're trying to give them some other entertainment while we're doing this to give us more time to get everything done," Howeth said.

The Foundation, just 12 members, could use 40 volunteers during the two-day festival. People will be needed for guarding gates, moving bands, making sure vendors are taken care of and garbage detail.

"We're still not sure where we're going to position everything," Howeth said. "Tentatively, it'll be similar to what we had last year, tentatively."

The Standin' on the Corner festival is set for Oct. 7 and 8 this year.
