When it was built in October 1926, the Howell Hotel was touted as the most modern hotel befitting an affluent clientele. It was also the first three story building in Winslow. It was eventually named the Chief Hotel and most recently the Hill Apartments.

The Winslow Apartments Company renamed the building located at 210 E. Second Street as the Chief Apartments several weeks ago out of respect to its historical significance.

The building was also once a part of the Senior Center and home to the Winslow Mail.

A fire gutted the inside but it was remodeled in 1980 and rebuilt for high-quality apartments. It was renovated again last year and sold to the Winslow Apartment Company.

Renowned local artist Bill Dixon produced a new sign that resembles the original Chief Hotel sign during its heyday from the 1930s to 1960s.
