WINSLOW -- The Hopi High School girls basketball team placed fourth in the Winslow tournament Dec. 15-17.
Hopi lost to Snowflake 46-35, beat Joseph City 50-46, fell to Coconino 54-53, beat Chinle 53-52 and fell to Seton Catholic 53-44.
Hopi has won six and lost five games this season. Deidra Jones scored 11 points and Nadia Nelson and Tracy Honanie added seven points apiece in the opening game against Snowflake. Misti Caldwell topped Snowflake with 19 points.
In the second round game, Savanna Anderson topped the Lady Bruins with 15 points, Tracy Honani tossed in 10 points, Carrie Sakeva netted five, Terra Morgan pitched in with four points, Nadia Nelson, Marlieta Burbank and Annalese Nasafotie had three points each,
Erynne Zahne scored a deuce and Rozanna Nasafotie and Patricia Sewemainewa had a foul shot each.
Anderson fired in seven points in the opening period as Hopi grabbed a 9-7 edge. Morgan and Honani scored three points each in the second period but Joseph City led 25-21 at intermission. Honani scored four points in the third quarter, but Joseph City extended the lead to 41-34. Hopi outscored Joseph City by 11 points in the final period. Anderson netted five points and Sakeva and Tamecia Lomawaima added four points as the Lady Bruins pulled out the victory.
In the third round, Coconino edged Hopi 54-53. Anderson topped Hopi with 21 points, Nadia Nelson netted nine, Rozanna Nasfotie tossed in eight, Carrie Sakeva and Marleita Burbank scored five points each, Candace Pocheoma pitched in with three points and Tamecia Lomawaima added two.
In the fourth round, Hopi edged Chinle 53-52. Candace Pocheoma paced Hopi with a career high 19 points, Tamecia Lomawaima fired in a dozen points, Annalese Nasafotie netted 10 markers, Ivy Honie scored seven and Carrie Sakeva scored five.
Taneesh Wilson led Chinle with 11 points, Eltasha James and Courtney Norberto tossed in eight points each and Charmaine Mitchell and Charmaine Lowe scored a half dozen points each. James netted six points in the first quarter as Chinle took a 14-10 edge. Sakeva kept Hopi close with four points.
Norberto poured in eight points in the second quarter as Chinle took a 32-21 lead at halftime.
Hopi started the comeback in the third period as Pocheoma scored seven points and Honie, Lomawaima and Nasafotie scored four points each as the Bruins pulled within 46-41.
In the fourth quarter, Pocheoma scored six points as the Lady Bruins pulled out the victory.
In the final round, Seton Catholic beat Hopi 53-44. Seton Catholic outscored Hopi 11-2 in the opening quarter and led 24-12 at intermission. The teams played even in the third quarter before Hopi outscored the opponent by three points in the final quarter.
Nadia Nelson scored Hopi's only basket in the opening period. Morgan and Nasafotie scored four points each in the second period. Anderson scored 12 points in the second half.
