Navajo County Superintendent of Schools AJ Brown has resigned from her position, due to serious health problems.
"I originally planned to retire on Dec. 31, although these past few weeks, I have been going through a lot, and have decided that there are some other things I would like to do, and I feel that if I retire in good health, then I'll have a good resignation," said Brown.
"The board has helped Navajo County so much, and I appreciate everything you've done for me," Brown told the county supervisors Dec. 5.
"Congratulations for moving on in your life, and thank you for the wonderful job you've done here for the county," said Supervisor J.R. Despain.
"I would like to nominate Linda Morrow to fill my position," said Brown.
"Linda Morrow from Blue Ridge has been working for Navajo County for two years. She has represented me at various meetings, teaches for NAU (Northern Arizona University) on a part-time basis, is the director for ESA, a certified teacher and has a master's degree in education. I believe her creative ideas would help the office run smoothly," said Brown.
"I know Mrs. Morrow, and I have no reason to disagree with AJ's decision. Mrs. Morrow is a wonderful educator, as well as a Democrat," said Supervisor David Tenney.
"She really knows what she's doing, and if AJ is confident in her recommendation, then I support her decision," said Despain.
"Not that I have any doubt in my mind that Linda Morrow would be a great candidate to fill the position, but I believe it's only fair that we have a face to face conversation with her, along with a detailed explanation of the job description before offering her the job," said Supervisor Percy Deal.
"I agree with you. I think, Mr. Deal, that you gave an accurate explanation, and that would be the most appropriate way to determine Ms. Brown's replacement. Therefore I will withhold my motion until the next board meeting," said Tenney.
"AJ, I appreciate your work through these past years. I have not received one complaint about your department. Furthermore, I would like to see your replacement carry on the same professional attitude and good work ethics," said Deal.
"I owe a great deal to my staff, because they've been very helpful and that in return, has made my job a lot easier," said Brown.
