Tuba City High School Warrior Chess Club took fifth place this year at the Catalina Foothills state competition with final round results as follows:
First round-Tuba City 4.5-San Luis 0.5
Second round-Tuba City 0.5-Highland High School 4.5
Third round-Tuba City 4-Yuma High School 1
Fourth round-Tuba City 2.5-Alhambra High School 2.5
It was a good year for the Warrior Chess Club, with a varsity chess team of five players and two players on JV chess team.
Warrior Varsity Chess Club members are: First Board, junior Samuel Lee; Second Board, freshman Benjamin Wheeler; Third Board, junior Nicolas Attikai;, Fourth Board, senior Nathaniel Lee and Fifth Board, junior Sekartney West.
Warrior Junior Varsity Chess Club members are: First Board, senior Letitia Castro-senior and Second Board, sophomore Theocia Van Winkle.
"The Warrior Chess Team played aggressively, with careful calculation and did not let up on the final end of state competition against larger schools," said Head Chess Coach Michael Belinte. "They did a great job and we hope to add more members to our team next year!"
Warrior Chess Club played at several chess competitions this year, including Alchesay, St. Michael's, Kingman, Winslow and Monument Valley High School.
