Labor Day Jam set for Ganado

A Labor Day Jam will be held Sept. 3 and 4 at the Jeans residence in Ganado (north of the Hubbell Trading Post turn-off). This free concert is open to the public and includes host band Fat Sheep with a special appearance by Richard Quintana. Special guests will be Badlands, Common People, Hard Country, Shotgun Riders, Full Deck, the Outlaws, Creeping Puppetz and more. Bring your own lawn chairs. Powwow and hoop dancing

Ceremonial dancers from five Indian Nations will gather in Tusayan on Labor Day weekend for the fifth annual Grand Canyon South Rim Native American Ceremonial Powwow and Hoop Dancing Contest. It will be held on the grounds at the Native American art show between McDonald's and the Grand Hotel in Tusayan. The three-day event kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 3 with a ceremonial powwow and frybread contest, Sunday will feature the Jameson "Sonny" Peshlakai Hoop Dance Contest with dance competitions for Tiny Tots, Juniors, Teens, Adults and Seniors. There is no charge to attend the Powwow.Traditional and contemporary silversmithing, clay arts, weaving and sculpture will be available for purchase beginning at 10 a.m. Sept. 3-5 as artists display their art and demonstrate their crafts. Help needed

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona seeks 30 community volunteers for Cliff Castle Casino's Fifth Annual Thunder Valley Rally on Saturday, Sept. 24 and Sunday, Sept. 25. The volunteers will greet and assist more than 2,000 bikers expected for the 150-mile poker run with seven stops beginning at Cliff Castle Casino. Volunteers are needed for registration and at each stop along the route: Munds RV Park, Lower Lake Mary Boat Ramp, Mormon Lake Lodge, Happy Jack and Fort Verde Gas. The Fifth Annual Thunder Valley Rally kicks off with registration from 8 a.m. -- 10 a.m., with the ride beginning and ending at Cliff Castle Casino. Volunteers are needed for both registration and post-ride activities as well as at the stops. Riders and passengers of the poker run will have the chance to win prize money totaling $3,000 for the lowest and highest poker hands. Sunday concert

On Sunday, Sept. 4, from 5:30-7 p.m., The Arboretum at Flagstaff will host the group Musica Dolce for an evening concert in the gardens with a magnificent view of the San Francisco Peaks. Enjoy traditional Medieval and Renaissance music performed on period instruments. Audience members are encouraged to dress in their finest Renaissance garb and to bring along a blanket, picnic, and beach chair to enjoy the performance under the shade of the ponderosas. The Flagstaff Community will host an observance of Sept.11 at the Law Enforcement Administration Facility (LEAF), located at 911 Sawmill Road in Flagstaff Arizona on Sunday, Sept.11 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The public is respectfully invited to solemnly assemble.

White Mesa Beardance

Everyone is welcome to the White Mesa Beardance held Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2, 3, 4, and 5 about13 miles south of Blanding, Utah. Cool Running event

The Cool Running 10 K & 2-mile Fun Run in Pinetop-Lakeside is just around the corner. It starts at Woodland Lake ballfields promptly at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. The 2-mile Family Fun Run begins at 7:45 a.m. and makes two laps around Woodland Lake. These events are open to runners of all abilities and ages. The early bird pre-registration entry fee is only $12 if postmarked by Sept. 21. Registration goes up to $15 after that. Welcome Back Bash

Leupp Schools Inc. is hosting a Welcome Back Bash 8:30 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Sept. 7 at the school. A finger-licking mutton luncheon will be served. Activities include a flag raising ceremony, a watermelon bust and training on the student/parent handbook. There will be door prizes and babysitting is provided.

Student art contest

The Grand Canyon State Games Art Contest promotes creativity in art as an effective method for youth to express their dreams and ideas for a successful life and a better community. This contest provides youth grades K-12 an opportunity to compete as a means of building self- esteem.
