Greyhills principal encourages input from students, staff and community

TUBA CITY -- Principal Daniel Nez Martin of Greyhills Academy High School said that he is excited and looking forward to the new school year. He shared his educational philosophy through standards during an interview on the first day of school, Aug. 8.

Martin said that it is vitally important for him to be accountable.

"I have set a standard to establish and maintain an effective learning climate in the school through the supervision of the school's curriculum development plans," Martin said.

He said that the staff can do this by focusing attention on students and helping them each and every school day.

Martin also set a standard to supervise the school's teaching process through classroom observation, the supervision of lesson plans and the preparation of the mid-year and end-of-the-year progress reports. The other standard Martin would like to work with is assuming leadership in the direction of the school's athletic and extra-curricular activities, and supervise the work of the athletic director.

He said that he would like to prepare or supervise the preparation of reports, records, lists and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the principal's responsibilities. He said this means applying the curriculum mapping process that was put together for the school and making sure every teacher will take a classroom management course either online from a university or is in the process of taking such a course at a nearby college.

Martin said that this includes making sure all freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors have committed school sponsors with the help of parents; sharing with the academic staff on how a budget is put together that they can understand and allow them to ask pertinent questions; and making sure students are academically challenged in a nurturing and safe environment.

Martin also said that he would like to provide safety for every one that is connected to the school in one way or another. This means students, teachers, parents, administrators, community members and business sectors.

He said that he would like to initiate, design and implement programs to meet specific needs of the school. As an example, Martin cited providing a shuttle from Flagstaff to Greyhills for certified teachers; provide opportunities for Greyhills students to read to local elementary schools; and providing the school nurse a larger room with bathroom and sink facilities.

Martin said that he likes having person-to-person contact with people. During the interview, he received a phone call and then invited the person on the line to come and sit down with him in his office to discuss the issue.

He headed down the hallway and before going too far, he stopped and visited with several students. He asked each one how they were doing and how the summer was for them. He welcomed them back, and wished them well for the school year, and he invited each one to visit him in his office anytime during the school year.
