City Council voted 5-2 in support of plans by the Winslow Golf Association to keep the city course up and running, this week in 2000.

WGA said it was open to ideas on expanding programs, especially geared toward youth. The group also talked about plans to add nature trails.

The WGA claimed to have 40 volunteers ready to help maintain the course and was seeking a management company to run the course.

The biggest cost in maintaining the course, according to the group, was not water but the electricity for the pumps.

Funeral services were held this week in 1972 for Athletic Director Doc Wright who died Aug. 14 at 55-years old. Wright was a beloved Assistant Principal at Winslow High School also.

Wright began teaching in his hometown in 1943 before joining the U.S. Air Force. He also coached basketball and track but his name lives on with an annual wrestling tournament.

A housing shortage forced the Chamber of Commerce to seek solutions this week in 1956. The city proposed building 30 low-rent units, which were expected to begin within months. The U.S. Air Force also planned to build homes for 27 personnel stationed at the nearby radar base.

The Chamber became involved because businesses were worried about workers asking to be transferred to other cities that had ample housing.

Flooding in Bisbee, Ariz. killed one man this week in 1929. The region received 2.34-inches within 12 hours causing canyons and washes to overflow. The man's body was found two miles away.

The headlines also featured flooding in two New Mexican towns. San Marcial, a town of 200, was completely wiped away by raging waters from the Rio Grande except for the Harvey House and Santa Fe depot. Damage was estimated at $100,000 in the town of San Acacia. Hundreds of livestock drowned but no humans were killed in either town.
