Bulldogs head into regionals on offensive tear

Winslow 11, Blue Ridge 6

The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets 11-6 in a non-conference baseball game played at Lakeside on Wednesday. The win improved Winslow’s record to 18-7 for the season.

The Bulldogs were slated to finish their 3A North Region schedule on Friday at Window Rock in a game that would determine first and second place in the region. There was also a non-conference double-header with Fountain Hills slated for Saturday. Winslow will host the 3A North Region finals and semi-finals on Friday and Saturday.

Winslow took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on singles by Lucas Armenta and Matt Oso. Blue Ridge tied the contest in the bottom of the frame on a lead-off double and a pair of ground outs.

The Bulldogs went up 2-1 in the top of third on singles by Jordan Payne and Armenta. Blue Ridge tied the game again in the bottom of the fourth on an error and a single.

Winslow went back in front in the top of the fifth 4-2 on a single by Payne, a walk and a double by Oso. Blue Ridge struck for three runs and a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the frame on two doubles, a single and a Winslow error.

The Bulldogs took the lead for good in the top of the sixth, scoring four times to take an 8-5 advantage. Alex Richards singled and after two outs scored on Payne’s triple. Armenta was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Anthony Martinez singled in both runners and scored himself on Oso’s single.

Winslow added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh without benefit of a hit. There were two hit batsmen, two walks, an error and a passed ball in the inning. Blue Ridge ended the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the final frame on a double and a pair of groundouts.

Oso went the distance for the victory, allowing six runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits and three walks. He fanned four.

Payne and Oso were each three-for-four with Payne having a triple and Oso a double. Armenta was two-for-three. Richards was two-for-four with a double. Martinez and Josh Stago were one-for-three with Stago having a double. Daniel Bailon was one-for-four.

Winslow 30, Pinon 4

The Winslow Bulldogs assured themselves of a spot in the state baseball tournament with a 30-4 rout of the Pinon Eagles in Winslow on April 19. The win left Winslow with a record of 6-0 in the 3A North Region.

Steffen Bailon worked the mercy rule-shortened game and allowed four runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits and six walks. He struck out six and hit one.

Payne was three-for-four with a double, triple and home run. Armenta was two-for-two with a double and a home run. Martinez was two-for-two with a double.

Remigio Sells and Daniel Bailon were each three-for four with Sells having a triple and Bailon two doubles. Pierre Arossa was two-for-three with a double and a triple. Steffen Bailon was three-for-five with two doubles. Joe Monsegur, Mark Armao, Richards, Adrian Smith and Stephen Soehner were all one-for-one with Armao having a triple and Smith and Soehner doubles. Alan Duran was one-for-two and Stago had a double in two trips. Oso was one-for-three.

The Bulldogs still had a regional game slated for Friday in Window Rock and a non-conference double-header with Fountain Hills on Saturday.

Results from those games were not available at press time. The results will appear in the May 4 edition of the Winslow Mail. The first regional game took place yesterday and continue today, Friday and Saturday. The Bulldogs will host the 3A North Region semi-finals on Friday and Saturday and have already qualified for the state tournament the following week.
