Rough start for JV football team

The Winslow High School junior varsity football team opened its 2004 season with a 46-0 loss to the Snowflake junior varsity in Winslow on Thursday.

Snowflake scored three times in the first period and led 18-0. Derrick Fusselman hit Bo Mortenson from seven yards out with 6:25 remaining, and then hit Ross Willis from 17 yards out with 4:01 left. Tyler Staker ran 23 yards for the final first period score with 2:16 left.

Fusselman hit Mortenson on a 33 yard pass with 8:11 left and Staker ran 40 yards with only 36 second remaining in the half to give the Lobos a 30-0 lead at the intermission.

The third period was scoreless, but Staker ran three yards at the 7:43 mark and Fusselman hit Spencer Huish for the two-point conversion that increased the lead to 38-0.

Staker ran five yards for the final touchdown with 3:01 remaining and Jacob DeWitt added the two-point conversion to complete the scoring.

The Winslow junior varsity will host Holbrook on Thursday with kick-off slated for 6 p.m.
