Freshmen lose first game of season

The Winslow High School freshman football team opened their 2004 season with a 38-14 loss to the Snowflake High School freshmen at Winslow on Thursday.

Snowflake scored twice in the first quarter on passes by Nick Reidhead. Reidhead hit Logan Rogers on a 64 yard aerial with 7:57 left in the period and Eliot Hopper from one yard out with only six seconds left. Neither conversion attempt was good and Snowflake led 12-0 at the quarter.

Snowflake scored twice in the third period  and led 30-0 before Winslow got on the board. Rogers returned a punt 47 yards at the 5:54 mark and Reidhead passed to Kevin Peterson for the two-point conversion. Ray Flake ran two yards for the other touchdown moments later.

Winslow reached pay dirt at the four minute mark of the third period on a 64 yard run by Vincent Dixon. The conversion failed and Snowflake led 30-6 entering the final period.

Fabian Leon put the Bulldogs on the board again when he ran 70 yards with a fumble recovery with 5:15 left in the contest. John Gonzales passed to Ray Grabowski for the two-point conversion that cut the lead to 30-14.

Hopper passed three yards to Rogers for the final Snowflake touchdown with only 20 seconds left, then hit Peterson for the two-point conversion that made the final score 38-14 in favor of Snowflake.
