The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Tuba City Warriors 6-1 on Friday and the Window Rock Scouts 7-2 on Saturday to win the 3A North Region Tournament Championship. Winslow will take a 19-9-1 record into the Arizona State 3A Conference Championship Tournament on Friday where they will face a Queen Creek nine that finish fifth in the populous 3A South Region.
Fernando Lopez got the victory on Friday against a surprisingly tough Tuba City Warrior nine. He allowed one unearned run on three hits, did not allow a walk and fanner 10 batters.
Tuba City grabbed the early lead scoring a run in the third inning on an error and two singles.
Winslow tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on singles by Lopez and Pierre Arossa.
The Bulldogs finally broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning with a five run outburst.
Lopez started the rally with a triple and scored on Nathan GarnerÕs double. Arossa singled Garner home. There was an error and a walk before Jordan Payne tripled to compete the scoring.
Lopez, Arossa and Matt Oso were all two for three with Lopez having a triple. Garner had a double in three trips. Michael Soehner was also one for three. Payne had a triple in four trips to the plate.
Alex Richards got the win in SaturdayÕs Championship Game, allowing two runs on five hits and five walks. He fanned three batters.
Window Rock took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on two walks and a single.
Winslow jumped in front 2-1 in the bottom of the first on a single by Jordan Payne, a walk, an error and a single by Matt Oso.
The Bulldogs got an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to lead 3-1. Arossa reached on an error. Oso singled and Arossa eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Window Rock cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth and missed a chance to get closer. The Scouts had two singles and a double in the rally but had a runner caught stealing.
A four-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth finally gave the Bulldogs breathing room and a 7-2 lead. Payne singled, Lucas Armenta walked, Lopez doubled and Garner homered to complete the scoring.
Payne and Oso were each three for four. Garner was two for four with a home run. Lopez was also two for four with a double. Josh Stago was one for three.
