Local hearing-impaired boy receives new prosthetic ear
Edmund Hobbs
Sandra said she and her son have never been so excited in their lives and truly believe his surgery is the most wonderful miracle in their lives.
Dr. Thomas Romo 3rd, chief of plastic/reconstructive surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, is the surgeon who fashioned a new ear for Edmund out of porous polyethylene.
The Little Baby Face Foundation, a group founded by Romo to provide free, top-of-the-line medical treatment for needy children, funded the trip to New York.
Edmund 6 is of the Hopi Native American tribe that is from Hotevilla.
Edmund’s surgery is to correct a birth defect called microtia.
Sandra said her son couldn’t hear clearly out of his left side because the ear canal is unformed.
Sandra said since her son has been in school, he struggles daily with his missing ear. Edmund, according to Sandra, will miss the next two weeks of school but will return a new kid with a new sense of confidence.
Edmund will be able to receive cards and letters from his friends at 135 East 74th Street New York, NY 10021 until Jan. 28th.
