Hipskind also observed Tuba City High School EPGY students during their computer lab session. Students worked on their individual programs in the gifted areas where they had shown their greatest academic strength.

“There are real culturally related educational issues which need to be addressed by our schools, in particular, as these may affect the limited enrichment opportunities made available to native students at all grade levels,” Dr. Begay said.

“Traditional English language based instruction, learning and testing, using instruments within this language (English) has its limitations, especially if used indiscriminately across cultures.”

Stanford partnership

Dr. Begay went on to explain the dynamics of the partnership with Stanford.

“Stanford University recognizes that there are compelling issues and needs, which must be addressed with our increasing number of diverse student population today,” Dr. Begay said. “In our work with Stanford, they have made it very clear that they have a deep moral commitment to give great attention to, ‘the unique needs of today’s linguistically, ethnically, and socially diverse classrooms,’ which are of critical concern to educators throughout the country.
