Bulldogs win two, head for America West

The Winslow Bulldogs won a pair of games in the Flagstaff portion of the Arizona State 3A Conference Championship Tournament on Friday and Saturday to earn a berth in the semi-finals at America West Arena in Phoenix on Friday. Winslow defeated Round Valley 80-68 on Friday and edged Chino Valley 71-69 on Saturday.

On Thursday, Winslow opened tournament play with an 80-68 win over the Round Valley Elks. The Bulldogs took a 23-14 lead in the first period and led by as many as 28 points before Round Valley cut into the margin in the final period and got within seven. Both teams had four players in double figures. Orlando Vargas led Winslow with 17 points. Jordan Payne with 16, Jeremy Taliman with 14 and Sean Begay with 11 all finished in double digits. Cory Wiltbank led all scorers with 19 points for the Elks. Willie Hamblin and Nathan Adair each scored 15 and Reed Crosby tallied 12 for Round Valley.

 On Saturday, the Bulldogs outlasted the Chino Valley Cougars 71-69 in a great game that wasn’t decided until the final buzzer. Sean Begay paced Winslow with 22 points. Jordan Payne scored 19 and Jeremy Taliman had 14. Dylan Fogel led all scorers with 30 points. Austin Grell with 18 points and Jace Lewis with 14 were in double figures for the Cougars.

Winslow will play the Seton Catholic Sentinels at noon on Friday at America West Arena. The Bulldogs will take a 19-12 record into the semi-finals.
