New Diamondbacks program could help fund Winslow leagues

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced that it would offer grants under its Play Ball Scholarship Fund to leagues or communities that have players in need of financial assistance.

The application for the grant may be found under the community section of the Arizona Diamondbacks Web site. The site can be reached at www.arizonadiamondbacks.mlb.com.

Winslow Little League and possibly the city softball league could meet the demographic requirements to qualify for such a grant.

The Little League program plays a major role in the community and serves many youths who could be classified as under privileged.

Fees are charged for participants in the program and some players and families have difficulty paying them. In most cases, the fees are paid by the league or its benefactors in the most severe cases.

Another source of funds, such as the Diamondbacks Play Ball Scholarship Fund would be welcomed.

The Diamondbacks provide a number of opportunities for communities to improve their athletic facilities and sports programs.

Most, such as those involving players and their wives are mostly limited to the Phoenix area.

Programs such as the Field Building program do benefit communities all over the state. Neighboring Flagstaff received such a field this past season.

Winslow city and Little League officials might consider looking into the possibility of applying for a Play Ball Scholarship Fund grant and even a Field Building project.

The team has established the fund and grants will be given. They are highly unlikely to go to a community that doesn’t apply.
