OPEC continues to control the American pocketbook

Feeling a dent in your pocketbook after visiting the gasoline pump? Well, youÕre not alone. Many AmericanÕs are having to hand over more of the green bucks since the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) announced it would reduce oil production in early February.

Since OPECÕs announcement, gasoline prices have significantly gone up, and continue to rise leaving AmericanÕs wondering if they will see any relief any time soon. Many politicians have voiced their concerns about the recent price spike at the pump. Governor Janet Napaolitano recently joined nine other democratic governors who wrote a letter to President George W. Bush asking him for a clear and precise explanation of the spiraling gas prices.

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry recently made the following statement. ÒRight now there are people all over this country who are literally going through their purses and their pocketbooks-looking behind the sofa, under the cushions to find the pennies and the extra money to be able to pay the additional costs of gasoline. They are giving up choices for their kids, giving up choices for their families to pay the extra $30 to $50 a week in order to be able to pay for gas. Those arenÕt Exxon gas prices we see ladies and gentleman, those are Halliburton prices and we deserve a break in this country.Ó

High gas prices arenÕt just affecting oneÕs pocketbook, they are also having a negative impact on our economy. With the price of gas going up, many business and services that truck in their products are having to raise their price on the products they sell in order to cover the extra transportation costs they have to endure.

Until prices start falling, we as Arizonans will just have to bite the bullet when paying more at the pump.
