Veterans & fallen Navajo soldier remembered in Birdsprings

BIRDSPRINGS — Last December, Gibson Jones received close to 20 letters from fifth-grade students of Little Singer Community School. Jones and the Native American Veterans of Vietnam War (NAVVW) of Tuba City had visited the school located in the community of Birdsprings in November and had made an impression on the students.

This led them to make their request: to please replace the American flag that had become quite tattered from the strong winds of a year’s time. NAVVW and Leupp’s American Legion Post #112 were joined by Teddy Draper Sr., a WWII Navajo Code Talker and Purple Heart recipient on April 8 to honor that request.
