Three touchdown passes give Hopi edge over Window Rock<br>

WINDOW ROCK — Quarterback Jeremy Adams threw three touchdowns as Hopi came from behind to edge Window Rock, 24-20, in high school football action Friday night.

Hopi improved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the 3A North.

Window Rock fell to 0-3 and 0-1 in the conference.

Adams connected on 16 of 33 passes for 229 yards. He was intercepted twice.

Kyle Navenma ran the ball eight times for 62 yards in the fourth quarter. Tyler Pete caught five passes for 108 yards. Michael Adams caught six passes for 85 yards. Michael Schjang had 70 yards in punt returns.

Window Rock opened with two touchdowns in the first quarter to grab a 12-0 edge.

In the second quarter, Adams connected with brother Michael Adams for a 25-yard scoring strike. The kick was blocked, but the Bruins had pulled within 12-6 at halftime.

In the third period, Adams found Tyler Pete on an eight yard scoring strike. The kick again was blocked, but the game was tied 12-12 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Window Rock scored to go ahead 20-12, but Michael Adams returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a TD as Hopi pulled within 20-18. The Bruins took the lead for good when Adams hit Pete with a 47 yard TD aerial strike as Hopi jumped ahead 24-20.

Hopi High Coach Russ Semore said the Bruins offense wasn’t as productive as the first two games.

“They ran different coverages and we came out a bit shaky,” he said.

Coach Semore said Hopi did a good job of moving the ball in the second half.

“Jeremy settled down in the second half and made some big throws. Our offensive line did a good job of protecting the quarterback. Overall, we played real well and fought through adversity to find a way to win,” he said.

Coach Semore said the Bruin defense played real well but still had a few breakdowns.

Tyler Pete led the defense with 19 tackles. Michael Adams had seven tackles and an interception. Seth Collateta had 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. Nigel Harvey and Jeremy Jelle had quarterback sacks, and Charles Villa had a key tackle deep in Window Rock territory. Kyle Navenma had six tackles and a fumble recovery.

Coach Semore said the Hopi High special teams did a good job of blocking on kickoffs and punt returns.

“Michael Schjang almost broke two punt returns,” he said.

Coach Semore said the only trouble they had was blocking opponents on kicks after Hopi’s touchdowns.

Hopi hosts Monument Valley Friday.

“Our boys learned how to win this week. We’ll carry on knowing that our spirits have been lifted and we hope to bring that into our next game,” he said.
