Hopi boys cross country team nabs 5th at invitational<br>

TEMPE — The Hopi High School boys cross country team grabbed fifth place at the Doug Conley Invitational Oct. 4 at Tempe High School. The top 25 teams in the state are invited to the Doug Conley Invite each year.

Page won the meet with 114 points and Catalina Foothills from Tucson placed second with 116 points.

The top four teams were 4A and 5A schools. Hopi placed highest among 3A schools.

Hopi High Coach Rick Baker said he was glad to finish the best among 3A teams, but he was not satisfied.

Hopi High was missing its second best runner, Harry Kisto, who was out due to a family emergency.

“We did well with what we had,” the coach said. “It felt good to be up there with the big boys.”

Coach Baker praised Stet Lomayestewa for running a great race.

“Two runners passed him the last 20 to 30 yards, but he beat several of the best runners in the state,” he said.

Lomayestewa had the goal of finishing in less than 16 minutes, but had to settle for 16:08.

Coach Baker said the rest of the Bruins ran well.

Despite the impressive showing, Coach Baker said it will be competitive when the field shrinks for the regional meet.

“I’m anxious for the regional meet because it will be competitive,” he said. “State will also be competitive. I’m not making any predictions, but we should be right in the thick of it.”

Coach Baker said the Bruins need to keep training hard and smart.

“We’re still working pretty good. We’re at the halfway point of the season, and we just need to stay together,” he said.

The Bruins finished fifth with 201 points. Rio Rico High School, from the south, was the closest 3A school with 410 points in 19th place.

Window Rock placed 21st with 444 points.

Chinle, a 4A school, took seventh place with 234 points. Coconino-Flagstaff, also a 4A school, finished in 23rd place with 465 points.

Charles Hampton from Brophy Prep was the individual champion with a time of 15:45 for the 5K race. Leif

Lomeland from Page placed second. Hopi’s Stet Lomayestewa grabbed fifth place with a time of 16:08. It was the top finish for anyone from 3A. There were 159 runners in the race.
