Miss Hopi Junior High

Amiottee Lewis, a 12-year-old seventh grader, said she was happy about being named Miss Hopi Junior High because it will give her another avenue for showing respect for her Hopi traditions. Lewis will represent Hopi Junior High at various events.

During her competition, Lewis sang a Hopi rainbow song.

Lewis, a B-average student, plays softball and basketball. She is in the Hopi class so she can participate in Hopi culture and language.

She is the daughter of Muriel Nevayaktewa and Leroy Lewis of Polacca.

Mr. Hopi Junior High

Gregory Gene Lomakuyvaya, a 12-year-old seventh grader, said he was glad to get the crown as Mr. Hopi Junior High.

“I’ve tried for years and had no luck, so now I’m happy that I have a crown,” he said. “I’ll help all the students keep up their grades, behave and I’ll try my best to be a good role model. I hope my classmates will appreciate me.”

During the competition, Lomakuyvaya talked about corn and its uses in the Hopi culture.

Lomakuyvaya, who maintains a B/C average, said he will work hard to improve his grades this year. He is active in Students Against Destructive Decisions.

He is the son of Felicia Namingha and Wayne Poleahla of Shungopavi.
