Winslow fans, time is running out for you to give an important Christmas gift to the Winslow school of your choice at NO cost to yourself. Arizona citizens can make a $250 donation to a public school of their choice and claim the entire amount as a tax credit (meaning you will be “forgiven” $250 you owe in taxes when you file your return). So, join me in giving one or more of the Winslow schools a much needed gift that will cost you nothing but greatly benefit your community.
Christmas morning is a time for opening presents and enjoying the company of family and friends. There are many presents I would like to give, but which are beyond my capacity to bestow. So, here are some of my Christmas wishes for friends, family and some in the sports world covered on the pages of this newspaper.
First, let me again thank Steve Finley for the “gift” he gave me and other Diamondbacks fans by signing with that team despite a more lucrative offer from the National League Champion San Francisco Giants.
For my brother Jerry Conner, I would like another 5A state basketball championship before the school drops to the 4A ranks next season. This one will be difficult, but is far from impossible.
For Mike Bibby and the Sacramento Kings, a healthy rest of the season and the NBA Championship they were robbed of last season. Bibby played for Jerry in high school and counts in the “friends” column. His injury this season was the first in his career that side-lined him for any length of time. This is a very possible wish as only some very questionable officiating kept it from happening last season.
For Curt Schilling of the Arizona Diamondbacks, another World Series and, finally, a Cy Young Award. It is hard to quarrel too much with the selection of Randy Johnson for that award in either of the last two years. However, it could have been shared either time and Schilling remains the best “big game” pitcher in baseball.
For Erubiel Durazo, a chance to play regularly and live up to his great potential.
For the Arizona Diamondbacks, Vladamir Gurrero and another World Series appearance. This wish, too, is well within the realm of possibility.
For the Arizona Cardinals, a winning season and some respect at home. That respect should be shown by people in stadium seats. Given the parity of the NFL, this wish should also be in the realm of possibility.
For all the Winslow High School athletes, winning and enjoyable seasons in every sport. It is awfully tempting to get personal here with some wishes for success for some who might be embarrassed to see such a request in writing.
For all of us, peace and prosperity in a world too often filled with danger and poverty of one kind or another.
