Winslow police arrest man for drug and sexual charges involving minors

On January 27, the Winslow Police Department Criminal Investigations Division (CID) received information of possible drug and sex offenses involving an adult male and several juvenile females. Investigative inquires were conducted resulting in additional information being gained.

Since the alleged conduct involved the use of drugs, the Navajo County Major Crimes Apprehension Tam (MCAT) was notified and responded to assist.

At about 6:30 p.m., WPD patrol, CID and two members of MCAT served a search warrant on a local motel.

The search provided evidence of drug use and is supportive of the information which prompted this investigation.

As a result of this investigation, 40-year-old John Alex Lopez was arrested and booked into the Navajo County Jail on charges of Indecent Exposure, Involving Minors in a Drug Offense and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Further investigation of Lopez led to the interview of two 15-year-old juvenile females, both of who reportedly received dangerous drugs from this individual. It was also alleged that J.A. Lopez exposed himself in the presence of three juvenile females, and that he lured all three to his room for the purposes of sexual exploitation.

Following these interviews, the Navajo County Attorney’s Office formally charged Lopez with three counts of Public Sexual Indecency and three counts of Luring a Minor for Sexual Exploitation. These charges can be amended or additional charges added as other offenses become apparent or the result of Lab Report are returned from the Northern Arizona Regional Crime Lab in Flagstaff.

The suspect is a registered sex offender. At the time of his arrest, Lopez was registered with the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office as required but had moved to an address other than what his registry showed and was therefore in violation of this section of Arizona’s six offender registration law.

Lopez is currently being held in the Navajo County Jail with no bond.

Any person having additional information regarding this case or any other criminal activity should call the WPD at 289-2431 or Crime Stop at 289-2100.
