Bulldogs squeak past Window Rock once, comebacks fall short in others

The Winslow Bulldogs eked out a 51-50 victory over the Window Rock Scouts in a 3A North Region basketball game played at Window Rock on Jan. 28.

The Bulldogs squandered a significant lead in the fourth quarter, but managed to hold on for the win despite scoring only six points in that period. Winslow led at every break after establishing a 15-7 margin in the first period. The lead was 30-23 at the intermission and 45-38 after three quarters.

Orlando Vargas had 13 points to lead Winslow and tied with Farentino Tsosie of Window Rock for game scoring honors. No other player was in double figures.

The Monument Valley Mustangs survived a Winslow Bulldogs come-back effort to take a 69-62 win in a 3A North Region basketball game played at Kayenta on Friday.

Reed Hancock led all scorers with 21 points for Winslow. Orlando Vargas finished close behind with 19 points for the Bulldogs.

The Window Rock Scouts edged the Winslow Bulldogs 68-66 in a ragged 3A North Region basketball game at Winslow that saw the lead swap hands numerous times in the final minutes of Saturday’s contest.

Forentino Tsosie led all scorers with 17 points for Window Rock. Bryan Smith with 16 points and John Huyser with 10 were also in double figures for the Scouts.

Ron Hoover and Shawn Begay paced Winslow with 12 points each. Carlos Quezada was in double digits with 10 points.

At the end of this week’s play, the Bulldogs had a record of 4-19 for the season and 3-9 in the region.
