Ladies finish season 27-5 in Quarterfinals

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the River Valley Lady Dust Devils 11-1 in the opening round of the Arizona State 3A Conference Softball Tournament in Phoenix on Friday.

Daphne Barton allowed only one hit and fanned seven in the contest which was shortened to five innings under the “mercy” rule. The run scored by River Valley was unearned as the runner reached on an error after a strike out.

Winslow took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on singles by Erica Armenta, Joanna Panana, Barton, Briana Conatser, two errors and a triple by JoDawn White.

The margin grew to 8-0 in the second inning on singles by Nicole Curnutte, Panana, Barton and Conatser, three errors and a sacrifice fly.

River Valley made it 8-1 in the top of the third on a strike-out that reached on an error and the lone Lady Dust Devil single off the bat of Ginger Juergeusmer.

Barton homered in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 9-1 in favor of Winslow.

The two runs necessary to invoke the “mercy” rule scored in the bottom of the fifth on singles by Curnutte and Armenta, two walks and an error.

Barton and Conatser were three for three. Armenta, Panana and Curnutte were two for three. White was one for two.

Sahuarita 4 Lady Bulldogs 1

The Sahuarita Lady Mustangs defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Arizona State 3A Softball Tournament in Phoenix on Saturday.

Shanon Anderson limited the Lady Bulldogs to a lone single by mound opponent Daphne Barton on her way to the victory. Anderson fanned 13 batters, walked one, hit one and did not allow an earned run. Barton, who wound up with an excellent 22-4 record allowed eight hits, fanned seven, walked three, hit one and gave up three earned runs.

Sahuarita took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning on singles by Nicole Sanders, Anderson and Kacy King, a key sacrifice and two wild pitches.

Winslow got on the board and cut the margin to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when with one out, Erica Armenta was hit by a pitch, stole second and went to third on an error and scored on Joanna Panana’s sacrifice bunt.

Sahuarita picked up two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a triple by Ashley Aldrich, an error, a walk and a single by Elizabeth Housley.
