Lady Bruins trounce Lady Knights<br>

POLACCA — Lady Bruins’ pitcher Tahmie Smith fired a four-hitter as Hopi walloped Greyhills, 12-2, in girls high school softball action April 17.

Hopi improved to 8-5 overall and 1-3 in the 3A North Conference. Greyhills dropped to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in the 3A North.

Chassity Gould led the Lady Bruins offense with two home runs.

Smith struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter.

Hopi High Coach Dirk Wirth said the Lady Bruins played okay.

“Tahmie pitched a good game, our hitting improved and we had some timely hitting. Chaz’ (Gould) two homers were nice,” he said.

Coach Wirth said the Lady Bruins could have fielded better but added that excessive winds didn’t help.

“The wind makes it tough. It makes it hard to keep your concentration,” he said.

Wirth said Smith stayed ahead of the count throughout the game as she constantly threw strikes.

“That makes it easier,” he said.

Greyhills scored the first run when Deanthia Begay tripled in the first and stole home.

Gould walloped a three-run homer in the home first as the Lady Bruins jumped to a 3-1 edge.

In the Hopi second, Terra Morgan singled, stole second and Cheslyn Nuvayaktewa knocked her home with a single. Nuvayaktewa scored on an error by the rightfielder as the Lady Bruins led 5-1.

Hopi exploded for seven runs in the third. Ivy Taylor started the big rally with a walk. Tori Yazzie followed with a single and Taylor scored on a throwing error on the play. Yazzie scored on a groundout. Morgan reached on an error and Becky Batala singled.

After they moved up on a passed ball, Nuvayaktewa knocked them both home with a single. Savanna Spurlock struck out, but when the catcher dropped the third strike, she was safe at first. Gould followed with a two-run homer and the Lady Bruins led 12-1.

Begay scored the Lady Knights second run in the fifth inning when she singled and came all the way around on an error by the outfielder.

Hopi rapped out ten hits with Gould, Nuvayaktewa and Morgan each slapping two hits and Spurlock socking a double.
