Winslow Bulldogs capture Captain Tony’s Classic crown

Michael Soehner shut out Greyhills on only two hits. He fanned 10 batters and did not issue a free pass.

Winslow scored four runs in the first inning on doubles by Fernando Lopez and Nathan Garner and singles by Jordan Payne and Lyle Brown, a hit batsman and an error.

The lead grew to 9-0 in the second inning on a triple by Lucas Armenta, a double by Garner, singles by Steven Martinez and Jon Ortiz and two errors.

Five more Winslow runs in the third inning made the lead 14-0. Martinez and Dominic Perez doubled; Armenta, Bill McCauley and Brandon Guzman singled and Garner homered in the rally.

There was a walk and Armenta tripled and Martinez doubled to account for Winslow’s final two runs in the fourth inning of a game that was shortened to five innings under the “mercy” rule.

Armenta was three for three with two triples. Martinez and Garner were each three for four. Garner had two doubles and a home run. Martinez had a pair of doubles. Payne and Brown were each two for two. Perez and Guzman were one for one. Lopez, McCauley and Ortiz were each one for two.

Lopez went the distance in the 16-1 win over Window Rock. He gave up four hits, walked one, struck out two and hit a batter.

Winslow took a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first on doubles by Garner and Andrew Richards and singles by Payne, Martinez, Lopez and Alex Richards, a hit batsman and an error.

Martinez homered in the second inning to increase the Winslow lead to 7-0.

The margin grew to 11-0 in the third inning on triples by Alex Richards and Jordan Payne and singles by Armenta, Martinez and Lopez.

Five more runs scored in the bottom of the fourth to make the lead 16-0. Lopez doubled, Alex Richards, Martinez and Brown singled and there was a hit batsman.

Window Rock scored its only run in the seventh on a hit batsman and a triple.

Martinez was four for four. Alex Richards was three for three. Lopez was three for four. Brown was two for three. Garner and Payne were two for four. Armenta was one for two and Andrew Richards was one for three.

Andrew Richards hurled the 10-0 shutout victory over Holbrook in the title game. He held the Roadrunners to one hit did not walk a batter and struck out five.

Winslow took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Armenta and Martinez and a Holbrook error.

The Bulldogs made it 6-0 in the third. Payne and Armenta singled, there was an error and Garner blasted his second home run of the tournament.

A double by Payne and singles by Armenta, Alex Richards and Andrew Richards produced three runs and a 9-0 lead in the fourth inning.

The tenth and final run scored in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of walks and a passed ball. That score caused the game to be halted due to the “mercy” rule.

Armenta was three for four. Payne was two for two. Andrew Richards, Alex Richards, Garner and Martinez were all one for two. Brown was one for three.
