Lady Bruins sweep Red Mesa in doubleheader <br>

Red Mesa — Hopi High School banged out 22 hits and used sparkling pitching performances as the Lady Bruins swept a doubleheader from Red Mesa in girls, softball action March 20.

Hopi walloped Red Mesa, 16-2, in the opener before taking the nightcap, 14-1. The Lady Bruins won both games by the 10-run rule.

Hopi improved to 5-2 overall, but remained 0-1 in the 3A North Conference.

Tahmie Smith, Hopi’s sophomore sensation, pitched the opener and struck out eight. Bobbie Bita took the loss for Red Mesa. Hopi banged out ten hits, but also capitalized on walks and errors.

Hopi Coach Dirk Wirth said Smith pitched an outstanding game.

“Tahmie was solid and our fielding was adequate,” he said.

Smith led the hitting brigade with two doubles and Lenita Poncho smacked a triple.

Hopi’s Eva Bahnimptewa, a senior, gave a strong pitching performance in the second game.

“She also gave a solid pitching effort,” Coach Wirth said. “Our defense was a bit better in the second game. Everybody got to play and hit in at least one of the games.”

Smith also smacked a double in the second game.

Hopi again capitalized on walks and errors to gain the victory.

Coach Wirth said he was proud earlier in the day when he learned that 11 of his players made the Honor Roll.

"That’s one third of the team. That’s a pretty incredible accomplishment,” he said.

Hopi's next game will be a doubleheader April 3 at Seligman.
