The Winslow High School volleyball team split its first two matches with 3A East schools on Sept. 3 and 5. The Lady Bulldogs dropped a match to always-formidable Snowflake two games to one and defeated Round Valley two games to none in those matches, both of which were played at Winslow.
The Lady Bulldogs took the first game of the set from Snowflake 15-10, but the Lady Lobos came back to tie the match 15-8 in the second game. The third game went down to the wire with Snowflake taking it and the match by a score of 15-13.
Winslow defeated Round Valley 15-5 in the first game of their match, and then completed the sweep of the Lady Elks with a 15-10 victory in the second game of the set.
Coach Liz McLaws said after the matches that the Winslow girls had been playing well together and giving reason for optimism. Winslow met Hopi at Polacca on Sept. 10 in an Enchantment Region game, played Payson at Payson on Sept. 11 and participated in a tournament at Coconino High School in Flagstaff on Sept. 14. The team played at Window Rock on Tuesday and will host Greyhills on Thursday with both contests being region competitions. Winslow will participate in the Round Valley Tournament at Eagar on Friday and Saturday and meet Tuba City on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Tuba City.
Team members of the 2002 Lady Bulldogs volleyball team include Kelly Willie, Erica Armenta, Nicole Williams, Stephanie Garnett, Starla McCurtain, Lindsey Begaii, Regina Yazzie, Juana Brown, Leah Thompson, Jessica Jensen and Brandee MacLean.
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs volleyball teams swept sets from Hopi and Payson on the varsity, junior varsity and freshman levels at Polacca and Payson on Sept. 10 and 11. The wins left the varsity with a record of 3-1 for the season and 1-0 in the Enchantment Region.
On Sept. 10, Winslow defeated Hopi 15-4 and 15-2 at Polacca in the varsity match. The junior varsity won both games of its match by scores of 15-9 and 15-6. The freshmen also won their match two games to none by scores of 15-1 and 15-4. Nicole Williams with nine points and Erica Armenta with eight led the varsity.
On Sept. 11, the Winslow varsity defeated Payson 15-7 and 15-5 to sweep the match. The junior varsity lost its first game 15-13, but came back to take the next two and the match by scores of 15-9 and 15-6. The freshmen won both games handily by scores of 15-1 and 15-6.
