TC flood wreaks havoc, unites community

In this area of deeply spiritual Hopi, Navajo and San Juan Paiute people, rain is seen as something sacred, beautiful, consistently and earnestly prayed for. But what started off as a gentle rain, quickly became damaging.

Rain started falling last Saturday and by Tuesday, flash floods were the final result of a four-day downpour. These floods cut through dirt roads and corn fields, closing the entire Tuba City School District down, demanding sandbags in the streets and housing areas and exhaustive joint efforts by several agencies for heavy duty road equipment and lots of extra long hours by several employees at the TC Warrior Pavilion, where several local families had to be housed because their homes were hit by heavy mud.
